A friend recently mentioned how she liked the look of the Burberry trench coat. I passionately agreed – they look so effortlessly cool! My husband passionately disagreed saying ‘Macs are dumb’ and talked about why they were pointless. Unfortunately, I hate to say it but I totally agree with him and can totally understand the rant. 🙂
I don’t get them either.
Before I moved to London I did a lot of research about the kind of clothes I needed to survive in London. I am Indian after all – I don’t do cold too well. (Of course in hindsight the thought of doing research and figuring out London weather is a laughable endeavour. No amount of research can prepare you for London weather. You just live and learn). Basically what my research told me is that along with my visa, I pretty much need a £1500 pound coat if I am going to London. Every list of wardrobe essentials mentions a trench coat – a Burberry trench coat is preferred.
Trench coats are basically rainwear so I understand the connection to London. What I don’t understand is how this garment is useful! Its never warm enough in the winter – you definitely need a separate winter coat. Its sweaty in the summer thanks to the waterproof material which is all kinds of gross. Ok so apparently you are supposed to wear it in the rain. That makes sense – till it doesn’t. Trench coats don’t come with a hood. If you wear it in the rain, you need an umbrella anyway. So you can just…use an umbrella.
I’ll admit it – its great marketing. I love the history and the story behind it. I love the idea of expensive, classic pieces which last forever. I want to be a part of that story! I picture myself walking into work wearing a great trench coat – so chic. But guess what? I walk to work so I will stick to my cosy winter coat and umbrella since of course, it starts raining just when I have walked past the tube station.
You must be wondering why I have these random pictures on this post. Well, I don’t own a trench coat, nor would it make sense putting pictures of me wearing a trench coat when I am totally dissing it in this post. So I decided to put pictures of me in my favourite (non-trench) coat!
