House renovations and decor is pretty much an ongoing process. It never really gets done. I cannot imagine a time when I will look around our apartment and be able to say that I am done – nothing else needs to be fixed. After the main living areas and the bathroom, I have now focused on kitchen decor and wanted to talk about a few things on my mind.
I am currently at the initial stages of our kitchen renovation/ planning. And there are some things I definitely want to change. Three things in particular.
Both DJ and I are fed up with our dining table.
This was the table with chairs left by the previous flat owners – same one in the picture above. We never sit and eat at the table. When we moved in we were quite desperate and barely owned any furniture (to be honest, not that much has changed since then!) so we kept it. We wanted to throw it out. A year and a half later its still here. We are not sure how to make use of the space if we throw it out. And where do we keep all the stuff dumped on it? Which was the reason we wanted to throw it out in the first place…
Also, on that note take a look at this video. And don’t miss my granola displayed on the table in the picture above. :-/
Now about the main kitchen area.
DJ and I have been at our current flat for a year and a half now and used the kitchen quite a bit. This is actually quite useful when planning your kitchen renovation – you get to know the pros and cons. Although we are used to the layout of things, we know the things that annoy us and the things we want to change. We also know whats convenient and well planned. For instance, the split refrigerator – one side freezer and one side refrigerator placed under our kitchen is something DJ hates. He is quite tall and the constant bending down to rummage around in the kitchen is annoying and now on the way to being physically painful for him. For me on the other hand, I am quite short and constantly reaching for the steps to reach the spices we use everyday is irritating to say the least. From this we have learnt that we need to use the mid-level space available to us in a more efficient way. And get a proper tall fridge!
Additions and Subtractions
Although we have a little bit of space around the kitchen area we realised quickly that if there is something we need to add we need to let go of somethings too. We have decided on this depending on what we use the most. I am definitely going to make sure there is a specific coffee/ tea area. We have various coffee machines and I want to make sure there is a specific place allotted for them especially because this is something we use everyday.
The other thing to keep in mind is that something that might be a staple for some people, might not work for you. We use our toaster about once in two months. And thats just because its there. It takes up counter space but its not good enough if its not used everyday.
And thats all for now. I will keep updating the blog with posts on all the home renovation that takes place. If you want to start on some home decor, this post is a good place to start. But if you are looking to make a little more superficial changes instead of something drastic like home renovation, this could be a good option.

It’s difficult trying to redecorate & throw stuff away. I suggest reading the art of tidying. It gives one amazing perspective on how to organize a home that brings joy. :]
