Originally I had a completely different post in mind for today and even started writing it. But seeing all the women’s day posts on Instagram was honestly, quite disappointing. Most posts about women’s day were basically just paying lip service to women’s day and selling make-up. I wanted to write a post about simple things almost all of us can do to hype the women around us and in the world on Women’s Day and throughout the year.

1. Consume art and sport created by women
This can be any kind of art and whatever it is that you enjoy. For instance, if you are a reader, buy books written by women. If you watch movies, go for movies with strong women characters or directed by women. Watch women’s sports. I personally have decided I won’t be watching movies where there are only men. I find most of them intensely boring and not worth my time and there are not my interest.
2. Support and buy from small woman owned businesses
This is something I try and do – yes, it can be hard to find small women owned businesses for all the stuff you need. I have found Twitter and Etsy are great places to find such businesses.

3. Call out sexism and sexist jokes
Always, always, always call it out. Whether in a conversation with friends, on social media, at work or at home. I know its hard sometimes and I have not been able to do this all the time either but it helps to get support from other friends. I believe as long it helps someone else think a little more before saying something sexist its a win!
4. Campaign for women’s rights and wellbeing
Even if doesn’t effect you, always sign the petition, bring up the subject, attend the protest. Campaign for women’s shelters, for refugee women, for women effected by climate change and any other women without the privilege you have. I always believe even the smallest activism makes a difference
5. Support women’s participation
Any event you go to, take note and ask about women’s participation. Does the conference only have male speakers? Does the music festivals only have male performers? Does the comedy line up only have male comedians? Even if this is not something that would prevent you from enjoying the show, even asking the organisers these questions helps since they know this is on the audience’ mind.

6. Support women at meetings
Its a known story women are given less time to speak at meetings and generally speak less. Make sure to not interrupt women in meeting or in class or otherwise in public.
7. Share household chores
Charity begins at home. (Even if its not really charity and basically just being an adult.)

I hope everyone had a productive weekend and an inspiring women’s day. I hope these simple steps make a little more meaningful and its something we continue doing everyday. If you have any other suggestions I would love to know and I am sure it would help out others as well. Of course you can leave comments on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter as well.
