Summer Favourites: Movies and TV Shows

2 October 2015 · 5 Comments

Half my free time goes into reading IMDB reviews about new movies and TV shows, and other half into watching them. It’s literally my favourite thing to do, ok maybe second favourite – but its a very very close second to reading.

We mostly watch on the computer but since we are moving soon we are thinking of buying a proper television set to watch some of our favourite movies and TV shows. I am currently eyeing this Panasonic one, the Panasonic Veira – its HD!

So today we talk about our favourite movies and TV shows. I tried to stick to 10 but honestly with all 3 of us pitching in it proved to be pretty much impossible. Hope you find some of your favorites in here, and in case you have any favorite movies and TV shows you think we should check out please do let us know!

Let’s start with TV shows/series:

 1. Mr. Robot

This is a new fast paced show about a young computer programmer who suffers from social anxiety disorder and forms connections through hacking. Its brilliant and being a computer engineer myself it literally had me binge watching the whole first season in a week.

IMDb rating : 9.0

2. Modern Family

Pretty sure everyone watches this already but on the off chance that you don’t, please check this out! Its so well written and consistently funny. Every single episode is a laugh riot. Must watch.

IMDB Rating : 8.6

3. Empire

This is a new drama series revolving around a music and entertainment company called Empire Entertainment and the drama surrounding the rights of succession among the family members. Its on its second season now and the music on the show is really awesome. If you like hip hop this is a great show to watch. And the fashion on it is also really great!

IMDB Rating : 8.0

4. How to get away with Murder

If you like crime thrillers you will love this. It’s about a group of ambitious law students and their professor who teaches a class titled ‘How to get away with murder’, who ironically get involved in a murder plot. Viola Davis plays the lead and recently won an Emmy for her brilliant performance on the show.

IMDB Rating : 8.3

5. Narcos

Anisha insisted that I include this one. It’s a chronicled look at the criminal exploits of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. It’s on my to-watch queue next!

IMDB Rating : 9.1

Honorary mention : Game of Thrones, Orange is the new black

If you haven’t been watching GOT, or like me waiting for next season to start already with bated breath, you must have been living under a rock. It is an adaptation of the series of books called A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, and extremely well shot and directed. I have to warn you though, it is super addictive.

OITNB is also an adaptation of a book and totally addictive. Its based out of a women’s prison and is completely hilarious. Great script and totally amazing performances by the whole cast. Especially Uzo Aduba who plays Crazy Eyes in the series is just brilliant, and she won a very well deserved Emmy for the role this year! It’s actually one of the best new shows I’ve seen in a long while.

IMDB Rating : 9.5

Watching Masterchef Australia. All the amazing food they make always makes me hungry.

Now let’s move on to the movies:

1. Ricki and the Flash

Someone finally realized Meryl Streep is a rockstar and decided to make a movie about it 🙂 This is a fun entertaining movie about a musician (played by Meryl Streep) who is trying to make things right with her family after years of leaving them alone to travel with her band. Her real life daughter actually plays her daughter in the movie, which I thought was quite cool.

IMDB Rating : 6.2

2. This is where I leave you

This is about a family of four grown siblings who return to live in their childhood home after the death of their father. It’s sort of a mix of a drama and a comedy, and its got Tina Fey in a very unusual role for her. A really nice movie in all.

IMDB Rating : 6.6

3. Begin Again

All 3 of us have seen this movie and loved it! Which believe me rarely happens. This is about a young singer/songwriter played by Keira Knightley, who moves to New York with her boyfriend who is a musician as well. Things start to get interesting when he signs with a big record label and starts to change. It’s got a really interesting cast and is surprisingly a really fun movie. I loved the ending!

IMDB Rating : 7.5

4. Gone Girl

I’ve read the book and love it to pieces. I love the movie just as much. Which is almost impossible, as the books are always better! But this is the one exception in my opinion. Its just that they got the casting so spot on, that now I can’t help but picture their faces when I read the book. You must watch, especially if you’re a fan the book.

IMDB Rating : 8.2

5. Jurrasic World

This is pretty much a continuation of the Jurassic Park series which I loved by the way (I know, I might be the only one 😛 ), so I thought I’d sneak this one in here. Even if you haven’t seen the other ones, this is still a pretty fun watch. Nothing serious or life changing, just a fun summer movie with awesome special effects and most importantly tons of dinosaurs!! 😀

IMDB Rating : 7.2

6. Closer

No list of my favorite movies would be complete without Closer. It’s such an underrated movie, but just so amazing! I have a copy of it on my computer and no matter how many times I see it, I still love it. Must watch if you haven’t already. It’s such an unusual story and so un-Hollywood like, especially with the really famous cast. It stars Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Jude Law and Clive Owen.

IMDB Rating : 7.3

Honorary mention : Minions, Trainwreck, Woman In Gold

Let me know if I missed your summer favourite movies and TV shows? Also if you have any recommendations please add to this list by commenting below. I would love to watch some new shows!

This post is a collaborative effort.

What’s the best tv show that no one is watching?

Bloodline – I really don’t know why Netflix hasn’t promoted it more. These are some of the others: http://fashionandfrappes.com/summer-favorites-movies-and-tv-shows/
