Review: Me So Happi

13 November 2014 · 5 Comments

I was in town for about a day or two and once I had eaten at my beloved Leo’s, I wanted to try out a new restaurant in Mumbai. So the sister and I with two other friends tried out the newly opened Me So Happi.

The location and decor is great – right on Linking Road, with quirky details including a vintage refrigerator and graffiti on the walls. As expected, I loved the vintage black and white checked diner floors and sister loved the red London telephone booth in the corner.

Now lets move onto the food and drink. First off, the restaurant does not have its liquor license yet – but that should not put you off the drinks. Bidisha ordered the Nutella Ferro Rocher Milk Shake which was amazing. Another friend ordered a juice called Mrs. Donnelly’s Punch with mangoes, pineapples, oranges and strawberries and it was quite good.

I ordered my good old cappuccino which took quite a bit of time to get to our table. However, to be fair, it was ordered off the menu and they took the trouble to make it by hand since they don’t have a coffee machine. I assume once they know the real demand (or not) for coffee they may (or may not) decided to get a coffee machine and save themselves the trouble. However, the coffee wasn’t great (so I am not even sure how you make a cappuccino without a machine). I have had better – and worse.

The jacket potatoes with beans and cheese we ordered as a starter was great – I though this was the best dish we ate that night (there are no pictures of it because no one waited before digging in). Sister and I ordered a salad and the chicken burger to share. I liked the salad, everything was fresh and the portion was good. The chicken burger was edible but not impressive although I did like the fact that the burger came with a side of banana chips – it was an interesting change.

A friend ordered the lamb stew which came with a side of rice and reported this to be good.

All in all we enjoyed our dinner but definitely think the food could be better. The staff is great, quite responsive and happy to help. One thing I have to mention, there were mosquitos under the table which was quite annoying – they definitely need to do something about that. Go for the shakes and snacks and then the drinks, once they get their liquor license. Hands down, the best thing on our table was Bidisha’s Nutella milkshake. Luckily, Me So Happi is located in a great area – a stretch on Khar between stores so a great place for a break between shopping.

Dress code (or rather guidance): This is quite a student happy place so anything casual including shorts and trainers should do. I wore a plain short tee shirt dress (which was a bad idea due to the mosquitoes). However, I am quite sure that like most other Bandra/ Khar bars and cafes this is going to get quite fancy dress-wise so if you are going in the night ‘casual-chic’ is recommended – whatever that means.

(I decided to add the dress guidance part in a review since this is really important to me. I feel it contributes to the vibe and mood of the cafe/ restaurant and to mine as a visitor, to a great extent. What do you think?)

Update: I earlier mentioned that the lamb stew was supposed to come with ‘wild’ rice. However, this was incorrect. The menu states ‘white’ rice which is what we received as well.
