There is a lot of royal news and scandal doing the rounds and I am fully invested as you can see from my Instagram stories. However, I wanted to talk about another kind of royal news that was doing the rounds last year about the queen no longer wearing real fur. It sounds great right? Well thats what I thought till I started mulling over the reality of real fur and faux fur.

Honestly, this post is basically going to be me rambling on with my thoughts on this. Please tell me what you think. This is such an interesting topic because it totally flips the normal idea we have about real fur and faux fur.
Let me be clear – even the thought of wearing real fur creeps me out to no end. I can assure you I will personally never ever wear real fur, currently own anything with real fur or will own anything with real fur in the future, resources and access notwithstanding. But when I read about the queen not wearing fur anymore I had so many questions.

I understand the news is that any new outfits requiring fur will have fake fur. I know she is the queen but seriously, she has the biggest wardrobe ever and I wonder why someone like her would need any new outfits at all leave alone outfits requiring any kind of fur? And this is where my issue lies. Why not just stop having new fur made without using fake fur at all?
And now lets assess the problem with fake fur. Everyone already know the issues with real fur and I don’t need to get into it. But the issues with fake fur are not so easy to discover since its not really discussed. There seems to be a narrative that disparaging fake fur is anti-animal and so on. But can we just step back and assess what exactly fake fur is. Fake fur is plastic and made from petrol and ultimately unsustainable. You guys know about my favourite red faux fur coat which I wear a lot. I bought it about 3 years ago. Everytime I wear it there are pieces of this ‘fur’ that falls off the coat. I guess there are pieces of this fur all over London by now. And this is nothing but pieces of plastic.

I have learnt my lesson and will probably not be buying another new faux fur coat unless its extremely good quality with no chance of shedding. But the best thing I can do right now is to continue using the ones I have since I already have it. And honestly, I have to confess, I do love it. Its extremely warm and one of those coats I don’t need to layer up under.

So to summarise my thoughts: I think wearing vintage fur is fine. Its always the most sustainable option to use what you already have and avoid buying anything new. If you have to buy fake fur, buy second hand. My favourite second hand stores are mentioned here. But from an environmental point of view, I am not sure fake fur is the answer.

Did you enjoy this quick post? These are definitely the kind of issues and ideas I am interested in writing about so will probably write more on these kinds of topics. I am thinking of moving to shorter posts but posted more often so lets see if I can build towards that. Have a great week everyone!
