London is one of those cities where you have an infinite number of touristy things to do (and not to do). Even after you have done it all you miss out on some, feel guilty for not going to that other museum or missing out on that monument. Bratislava, Slovakia is a small city and even a weekend will be relaxing and tourist guilt free – you can do the basic sightseeing, eat at some good restaurants and visit some great cocktail bars.
1. Bratislava Castle
This is the thing to see in Bratislava. Although more than the actual castle its the gardens that are the thing to see in my opinion. The walk upto the castle is also a part of the experience.
I’ll be honest, this is not a dramatic building or particularly ostentaious but its a nice space to spend some time in. Walka round the gardens and around the castle to see the views of the city.
2. Eat the Traditional Potato and Cheese Soup
I”ll be honest – I didn’t take to Slovak food. Its mostly potato and cheese based which was just too heavy for me but this potato soup was yum! Also loved the way its traditionally served inside a bread roll.
3. Walk Around the Old Town and Check out the Shops
Walk around the Old Town, eat ice-cream, check out some of the strange shops on the way.
Make sure to check out this sweet shop – you cannot miss it. Even while you are passing by the smell of sugar hits you! Check out our Instagram stories to see a video of how they make the sweets.
We went and ate in a bakery called the Konditorei Kormuth. Its a beautiful shop (although also slightly creepy) and very old world – I guess the pictures speak for themselves. You have to get a cake and a hot drink for 10 euros – which is way overpriced – to get in. In all honestly, I would not recommend eating here although the decor is interesting to see.
The pastries look lovely but taste not so much.
We saw a lot of well dressed people going for the Oprah so if thats your thing maybe try and catch a show.
4. Blue Church
I really enjoyed seeing this – it almost looks unreal. Its a candy blue church!
5. Walk along the Danube
On our last day there we did a walk along the Danube over the bridge, had ice-cream on the way and generally had a nice relaxing time. You see a lot of cruise ships on the shore because there are lots of cruise trips that go along the Danube stopping at the cities on the way – Bratislava being one of them.
6. Shooting
So shooting is a very popular activity in a lot of eastern European countries and we tried it out in Bratislava. I would say its an experience, not something I would do again probably but interesting enough to try out once. We tried out a shot gun, a pistol, a Kalashnikov (AK47) and a sniper rifle.
