Some of us (by which I mean me!) have been there: a bathroom shelf jam-packed with toners, serums, exfoliants, face mists, moisturisers — each one promising luminous skin. But somewhere between the jade rollers and the double masking, I was more confused than luminous. In my current life with a 6 month old, my previous complicated skincare routine wasn’t working anymore. Honestly, I just didn’t have the time, energy or inclination.
So I hit pause. I boxed up my elaborate product lineup and decided to find out what would happen if I simplified everything. No fluff and no filters. Just a clean slate.

That’s how I ended up doing a ‘skin reset’ and placing all my hopes on one product: a simple facial cleanser.
Why Start With a Reset?
The idea of a reset isn’t new. We do it with diets, with phones, even our social media feeds. We clear the clutter to see what really matters. Skin should be no different.
I especially needed this after my holiday in Italy. Italy was lovely but scorching and my skin needed some calm. Also honestly, although I have dry skin and don’t usually skip moisturiser, summer in London has been almost as hot as Italy so applying moisturiser is a losing battle. My face is a puddle in a minute so I skip the moisturiser as well.
For me, this ‘skin reset’ was also a reality check. I realised I’d been trying every new thing and products that worked for me earlier didn’t seem to be working anymore and I needed something that worked with minimal makeup during the hot summer. So I stepped away from the noise and made space for skin to speak for itself.
The Product I Chose
I needed a clean slate to start off. Of all the things I boxed up, I kept one: a purifying facial cleanser. That’s it. No serums. No toners. Just one product, used twice a day — morning and night. (And sunscreen of course).
I chose this cleanser for a few reasons, none of which had anything to do with its label design (although it is chic). It was the ingredient list that caught my attention: gentle ingredients that actually cleanse without stripping and botanicals that calm rather than irritate. Plus, reviews were honest. There were no overnight miracles. Just calm, consistent results over time.
I gave it 30 days.
Week 1: Adjusting to Simplicity
Starting was strange. My skin had grown used to layers. After all, I’d been feeding it like a buffet. Now, all it got was a simple facial cleanser and some lukewarm water. I confess: part of me was worried. Would everything go haywire and would I need to start from scratch again?
Spoiler: it didn’t. In fact, after the first few days, my skin didn’t feel tight or raw like it often did post-routine. I had always felt this was because I had dry skin but now my skin just felt neutral. Refreshed, but not reactive. It felt right. It was as if my skin (and me!) had let out a small sigh of relief.

Week 2: The Subtle Shifts
Here’s where the experiment got real. Normally, I’d wake up with dry patches around my cheeks and leftover irritation from sleep creases. But during week two, my skin balanced itself out.
The biggest difference? Texture.
The bumps along my jaw started to soften. My cheeks, once prone to flare-ups, looked calmer. The cleanser simply removed the grime and left behind skin that felt clean but never tight. And the best part of it all was that my routine took less than two minutes! For the first time in years, I started looking forward to washing my face instead of seeing it as a chore.
Week 3: Less Is Actually More
This is the part where most people expect a breakthrough. Big changes. Dramatic results. But simplification isn’t about instant gratification. It’s about consistency with purpose. The changes were slow but steady. Fewer clogged pores, a fresher skin tone, and a kind of softness that didn’t come from lotions and potions.
This cleanser had clearly become more than just a wash. It was resetting more than just my pores. It was calming my approach entirely. I wasn’t obsessing over dryness or dabbing on spot treatments. I was living my life and letting my skin do its thing.
Week 4: The New Normal
By week four, I was seeing a whole new side of my skin and myself.
The breakouts that used to hijack my confidence? A lot fewer. The irritation and bumps? Noticeably lighter. My face didn’t feel like a problem to be solved anymore. I also realised that since this reset was intentional, I stopped feeling guilty for having a ‘lazy’ routine. Turns out, simple isn’t lazy. It’s smart. And my skin agreed.

What I Learnt
Here’s what this reset taught me: your skin isn’t asking for more. It’s asking for better. ‘Better’ doesn’t mean expensive or trendy. It means fewer irritants and gentler ingredients. More thoughtfulness, fewer steps. The facial cleanser worked for me, not because it was flashy, but because it did the one job it was made to do: cleanse. And did it well. That is it.
If you’re standing in front of a 10-product lineup right now and still not seeing the clarity you crave, maybe it’s time you ask: What if you took it all away? Let your skin breathe. Let it start fresh. Hit reset.
The idea that skincare has to be extensive to be effective has been sold to us for years. But good skin can start with just one smart choice. If your routine feels more like a chore and your shelf looks more like a chemist’s, consider giving your skin the silence it needs to speak. Trust me: it knows the way back home.
