I like how we have started wear metallics in the day. I remember at one point of time metallics were only worn during weddings or during Christmas and New Year parties. All my metallic clothes were relegated to the back of my closet for the rest of the year unlike now where the trend is to wear metallics in the day.
The trend these days is mix and match and wearing clothes in unexpected ways so I feel totally at home wearing metallics in the day. There are of course certain ways in which you have to tweak your outfit to make it look appropriate for the day. I love doing this because it’s definitely more fun and of course, you get more wear out of your items.

Textures
Metallics are already luxurious (or appear to be) textures so if you are wearing something metallic in the day pair the metallic item with less ‘luxe’ textures. Good options are basic knits, denim or basic cotton. Keep away from silk or velvet since they definitely look more dressy.

Example: I paired my sparkly silver skirt with a basic black knit jumper.

Stick to Silver
Most people either prefer silver or gold. For me its silver although there are tones of gold I love. But I just can’t work gold into a casual look. Gold is too gaudy, I definitely find silver easier to pair with in the day. Also silver and grey go so well and look super casual.

Example: This silver skirt I am wearing is already quite dramatic due to the pleats so a gold one would definitely be way dressier for our trip to Kensington Palace.

Add something prim/ proper to make it work
Ensure the outfit includes something less casual to make it look more serious so the craziness of the metallics is balanced out. Items like blazers (which is what I aim to try wearing this skirt with next) or pumps work well.
Example: I added a metallic headband as well but it works since a headband is a very prim-proper look.
Outfit details: silver pleated skirt from Topshop (midi and mini), black jumper from Pretty Little Thing (gifted), Chelsea boots from Zara, Chanel Boy bag and silver metal headband from Forever 21.
Wear in Non-sunny Weather
I know this sounds like really silly advise but I think metallics catch way too much light in the sun and its just a tad much for the day. Its too attention grabbing, so its great for a cloudy day but might be too in-your-face for a sunny day out.
Example: I wore this on a slightly cold dreary day and it felt like such a happy counter to the grey day!

So thats my lesson on wearing metallics in the day. What metallic items do you own? I would love to see and also quite interested to hear what everyones opinion on wearing metallics in the day is? Let me know in the comments on Twitter, Facebook and of course, Instagram. Thank you for reading.

I actually never wore metallic clothing, it never called to me and I never felt compelled to do so but it’s a really cool style and it looks super unique, I’m sure I’d catch some looks from strangers but in a positive way.
Haha – definitely a good idea to try it out if you want to!
I love your skirt! I have some metallic silver shoes which I love, although I feel like they’re more appropriate for autumn/winter so I think they’ll be heading back into my closet soon.
Thank you Samantha! Why not try the skirt with white sneakers? It looks so much more casual – maybe try it for spring!
I am loving how you are working metallics in the day! I wouldn’t have thought of bringing them into day time wear but it is so doable!
Its definitely doable. I hate wasting clothes keeping them lying in the closet!
You look amazing! Beautiful photography too!
Thank you so much Jenny!
I have a skirt like this but have hardly ever worn it – will take these tips on board
Please wear it! I think once you start it seems simple enough and easy to continue!
I really like your metallic skirt as it’s muted so you get that pop without it being too overpowering x
Yes – thats why I am partial to silver. Gold looks too much on me although I would love to carry that off!
I have a silver skirt just like this and it’s amaizng how much wear I get out of it! X
Same! I think once you are outside the mindset of wanting to wear metallic only in the festive season it gets easier to wear it!
Yes, it feels very intimidating but actually quite easy to get wear out of it.
You wear metallics well hun. I totally love the skirt, looks very cool and chic xx
Thank you! Super glad I managed to snag this skirt.
I love that skirt! It’s definitely great to brighten up a dreary day.
Haha totally!
That’s such a beautiful skirt. I don’t think I’ve ever worn Metallics but would love to try now
Yes, please do! Its fun to wear and easy to pair with other neutral basic items.
