Can I Be a Fashion Blogger Without Fast Fashion?

25 February 2019 · 20 Comments

I have been a little disillusioned with fashion blogging and especially Instagram, or rather the fashion posts on Instagram. There are a few reasons for this. What has begun to annoy me a little bit is the general lack of creativity that I see. I’ll explain in a minute but of course, fast fashion is involved.

Since I have not mentioned this enough šŸ™‚ Ā I have stopped buying fast fashion. At least I am trying my best to avoid it. The last fast fashion item I bought was in June last year so lets see how long I can manage and go without. I remember telling a friend about this plan and she asked how would I manage to not shop while blogging and will I be wearing my old clothes? I said yes, thats the plan.

Outfit post: Red faux fur coat (expensive and budget), red patent skirtĀ (similar), white tee, black Chelsea bootsĀ (similar) and Boy Chanel bag.

It was when she mentioned it that I thought about how fashion blogging works now. Most fashion bloggers buy clothes monthly if not weekly. Every outfit post is made of new clothes. So its actually not a new outfit but new clothes.

I remember listening to a podcast called Control Alt DeleteĀ (highly recommended!) where the host was interviewing a fashion blogger. (Make sure you check out out list of favourite podcasts). The blogger mentioned how she buys new clothes for her outfit posts because that is what her readers expect and want. I personally feel this could not be further from the truth. One of my favourite fashion bloggers, Brooklyn Blonde wears same or similar clothes and has a particular style and honestly, that is what I want to see. One of my favourite posts from her was a really old skirt which she has styled in so many ways. I love reading and being inspired by posts like that. The fast fashion haul and shopping videos are just not my cup of tea.

So this is what I was keen to ask my readers as well – what is the fashion content you guys want to see? My aim is not to make you shop – honestly I don’t want you guys to shop at all. What I want to do is come up with new outfits with old clothes, wear the same dress in different ways, enjoy the clothes you own and actually be creative in the process. This is what I enjoy about fashion. I personally don’t see any creativity in buying and wearing new clothes every week. Its easy to look fresh and styled and interesting when you have new clothes every week but where is the personality and creativity in that?

What are your thoughts on this? Do you agree with me? Do you love shopping often and trying out new trends? Or do you even care about creativity in outfit styling or is this something that is not important to you at all? Let me know please – I would love to get a conversation going about this. And ending with the usual, share our posts, follow us on social media and subscribe to our newsletters. Its really helps us since we don’t have any money to advertise! I relate so much. I used to think I had to shop for new clothes all the time to show them on my blog but recently I’ve been thinking more and more about stopping that and shop for better quality clothes not so often and reuse them instead of buying new things all the time. I did worry that my readers wouldn’t be so interested in seeing old clothes but then I realized my outfit posts were my least successful posts anyways. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who shares the same mentality that I do and I feel like more and more we’ll start to see this from bloggers as we get more informed and educated over time.

Thank you so much for the comment Marta. Honestly, I am sure your readers are glad to see the same clothes because it is so much more realistic and relatable. Yes, I am waiting for more bloggers to catch on. But the other side I see if bloggers suddenly jumping on the sustainable issue for one post and then forgetting about it.

I totally agree. I see so much fast fashion on blogs and Instagram and do feel like these bloggers could do just as well without the fast fashion they stuff their platforms with.

Its actually become quite a turn off for me. Any blog or Youtube channel with hauls I just can’t bear to watch anymore.

I have a friend who gave up being a fashion blogger because she couldn’t keep up with fast fashion. I share fashion posts on my blog and its rarely new clothes. I think my readers want to see how I style my clothes not necessarily new ones.

Oh no – that is so sad! I am a little frustrated with the pressure of trying to buy new clothes for outfit posts. And totally agree – I would definitely prefer to see the same clothes worn in different ways. Thank you for reading!

I really like this post! I am by no means a fashion blogger but for 2019 I have decided to give up fast fashion in the hopes of being that little bit more sustainable! I’ve chosen to instead stick to a personal shopper to buy longer-lasting fashion which has been picked with me in mind x

Yay! Thank you for the comment and on the resolution. Giving up fast fashion was my resolution for the year as well and I am so happy about that. Fast fashion actually creates more stress in my life so I am happy to be giving up on that.

Ive never been one for fashion or following the latest trends but I think you could easily carry on blogging even if you don’t buy new pieces all the time. Fashion is about an interpretation and I’m sure you could use your current wardrobe picks to make new styles or designs. Plus resulting is always more fun and you can have one of a kind pieces!

Thank you so much. Totally agree – I don’t see any skill in buying and wearing new clothes everyday. Wearing the same stuff in new ways is whats interesting!

I wear what suits me these days and not what is in fashion – things come and go so quickly

As someone who looks at fashion bloggers as a source of inspiration- it is a million times better to see bloggers exploring looks and styles with clothes they already have and offering styling inspiration that ā€œnormalā€ people can try and imitate. Buying new clothing every day and just having a new skirt/dress/coat every week doesn’t ā€˜help’ anyone!

Thank you Rachel. Thats exactly the way I look at it as well. That kind of style is not attainable for most people and therefore pointless.

Hey, I too believe the same….The style shouldn’t cost u bomb…it should come easy to you…not depending on what you wear every time should be new. As fashion keeps on changing every fortnight, one cant be crazy shopping and spending bucks on unique apparels, accessories, shoes etc. People should write such a blog which is the need of the hour. It will change the way people think. I feel one could be trendy enough by mixing and matching our own old wardrobe too. Fashion doesn’t always mean to be wearing what doesn’t suit us or following blind trends. Whatever we wear must be comfy, cool and edgy may it be repetitive…shouldn’t matter much!!!We(my sis n me) too have a website which is about fashion, travel, and fitness.

So so true. I hate following trends – it seems to pointless. You are just dressing the way someone else told you to? The point is to wear good clothes that last long and show off your styling in creative ways. Thank you!

hey! I Absolutely agree with you . what’s will be the point of giving fashion advice if we just wear the expensive clothes and click pictures and post. Styling should be all about using your own creativity to style with minimum cost.

Thank you Juhi! Yes, the creativity seems to be lost these days which I am sad about.
