Kirkby Lonsdale: The Best of Lake District and Peak District

7 September 2020 · 2 Comments

I am definitely going to post about our Lake District trip in detail but wanted to do a quick post on Kirkby Lonsdale as well. Although technically Kirkby Lonsdale is a village in Cumbria its nearer to the Peak District. Its pretty much right in the middle of both the peak district and the lake district. I personally think it was the perfect base to explore both and definitely the best place to stay for the Lake District. Here’s why.

Best of Both Worlds

Kirkby Lonsdale

It took us about a 30 minutes drive from Kirkby Lonsdale to get to the the southern lakes and about 1 hour or so to get to the northern lakes. It was a lovely drive and it was definitely a good plan to stay away from the actual popular Lake District towns which are incredibly crowded and expensive.

Great Restaurants

The other reason we loved Kirkby Lonsdale was it had some really lovely restaurants. Food is a big part of our holiday and we ate dinner in the village every night and really enjoyed it.

The Royal Inn restaurant

We would recommend the Pheasant Inn (which is in the next village, about a 5 minute drive), Number Nine, the Lunesdale Bakery and The Royal Inn for food.

Gorgeous Historical Town

Honestly, even without the trips to the Lake District I would highly recommend Kirkby Lonsdale as a weekend or a long weekend trip. Especially if you are based in Manchester it is a perfect weekend getaway. Its a historical market town / village with the most beautiful high street and some lovely views (make sure you check out Ruskin’s Views).

Beautiful Cottages

For me, the reason I loved Kirkby Lonsdale the most was probably the absolutely adorable cottage we stayed in. The cottage is from the 1800’s and gorgeous. This is the Airbnb link and you can use this link to get some discount on the booking.

Hope you enjoyed this short post. I have posted a lot of pictures and videos of the cottage and of Kirkby Lonsdale on Instagram so check that out as well. If you are looking for more ideas for travel in the UK and day trips from London we have those as well.

I haven’t been to Kirkby Lonsdale before and the nearest I have got to the district is Kendall but it was only for 1 night as it was for a wedding. I have always heard that the Lake District is amazing and beautigul but still need to see it for myself one day.
